Some of the projects we have helped with include:

NZ Spinal Trust Rehabilitation Garden

By providing funding for the rehabilitation garden at the Burwood Spinal Unit in Christchurch, The Rugby Foundation has created a peaceful retreat for patients and visiting family to spend time during their term of hospitalisation. A similar project is planned for the Auckland Spinal Unit at Otara. Work on projects like these is one way that rugby, our national game, can contribute to wider community needs.

Vehicles and Computers

Five of our rugby tetraplegics have never received state funded assistance because they were injured prior to ACC. We helped by purchasing modified vehicles for them.

We have also purchased numerous laptops, desktops, and associated componentry for our injured players. This is in keeping with our objective of empowering our players to obtain additional qualifications and test themselves.

Home Renovations

We conduct regular needs assessment interviews with our injured players. Often our players identify issues around the family home that need attending to. We then source quotes for undertaking the work and fund it accordingly.

Boarding Fees

We have provided support to injured players families by funding boarding fees for secondary school.

National Provincial Wheel Chair Rugby Championships

The Foundation partially funds the National Provincial Wheel Chair Rugby Championship and also the highly successful Wheel Blacks in their preparation for international events.

Reactive NZ

Our support enables rugby tetraplegics to attend Reactive NZ. This is a specific physiotherapy centre for S.C.I rehabilitation, which is not funded by ACC.

NZ Areas Schools Rugby

Each year the Foundation runs the NZ Area Schools programme. This involves selecting and funding the NZ Areas Schools representative side who play a number of matches each year. In order to be eligible players must attend Area Schools which are in remote rural areas throughout NZ. It gives young men a chance to shine on the big stage which would otherwise not be open to them. A number of former Areas Schools players have gone on to higher representative honours including NZ 7?s, Super 14, Air NZ Cup and Provincial Academies.

NZI 7’s – Wellington

In 2009 and 2011 the Foundation took 25 seriously injured players and their caregivers to the 7’s. A truly unique event, it was a wonderful reunion for the guys, many of whom had not seen each other in 20 years. We intend on repeating this exercise every couple years.
